Can I list an item using fanciful jewelry trade names to describe new colors or stones? |
Reliance on wholesale suppliers' suggestive trade names when describing components in jewelry may cause a buyer to make an incorrect assumption about a purchase. For example, Serpentine stone is often called 'New Jade' by some bead suppliers but Serpentine stone is not Jade.
When selling jewelry, item descriptions should reveal to potential buyers the true nature of components used, including beads, stones and findings. This includes any article with an artificially produced color, that is composed of glass or that has other man-made aspects that might otherwise be mistaken for a 'natural' product. Choosing not to employ trade names which might mislead as to actual composition or substance is a best practice.
When a stone or substance of a peculiar color suddenly appears on the market advertised with a trade name you've never before heard, we recommend asking questions about the true applicability of the name before accepting it for general use.
